Mama I’ve Got The Blues
A visual story of a brotherhood. What was supposed to be just a portrait shoot turned into a exploration into a narrative that is strong across the board. Certain men who wear certain colors are _________. I give you a quick glimpse into the lives of the men that are vilified throughout media and show you another side, a still very accurate but more gentler side. The past couple of years I’ve noticed that photographers would photograph black men in a completely different environment than you’d normally see them in. In a beautiful field, draped in flowers and wearing colorful flowy outfits to show that they are gentle and not a threat. Visually beautiful but just a teensy unrealistic. With Mama I’ve Got The Blues that message is still very clear. You can feel the compassion they have for each other through the images, the joy they exude from being around one another and the love they have for their community.

#Quarantineselfportraits was a way to keep my mind busy during one of the most tumultuous times, 2020. Within the midsts of life as I knew it being completely turned on its head, trying to stay grounded, being bombarded with news around the clock everyday I found myself trying to grasp any type of control and I found it within my creativity. I started documenting my days indoors doing various activities wearing different outfits and finding ways to challenge myself creatively all within the confines of my tiny micro apartment. Doing this project ignited the passion for creating again and reminded me that the limits we put on ourselves are truly within our mind.

“The wonders Inn” was created during a time when I was in deep thought about everything pertaining to Identity. How we view ourselves, how society views us and the different masks we wear throughout life to navigate our surroundings. At the time I myself wore many masks and it wasn’t until I was in the comfort of my own company that the masks that got me through the day finally came off. The wheels in my brain started turning as I began asking Who am I? and “The Wonders Inn” was born. A motel where people came to release their inhibitions, take off the mask to truly be themselves and we the viewer got a peak inside that world.
